You’re absolutely right! Puppies are incredibly sensitive to our energy. Projecting calm energy can help. However, you aren’t always going to feel calm. You are human and you are going to feel intense emotions from time to time. These may include: frustration, overwhelm, sadness, anger, etc.
Projecting these emotions on your puppy will make them more hyper. Instead, notice how you feel and choose one of the methods below to help both you and your puppy ground.
Here’s a breakdown of Techniques to Help Your Puppy Settle:
- Help Yourself Ground: This is the foundation. When you ground, you project calmness. This creates a more soothing environment for your puppy. Instead of projecting flustered or excited energy when your puppy is hyper, choose more calming choices with your body and your voice.
- Relaxing Music: Calming music can create a more tranquil atmosphere. Try classical music or nature sounds. Relaxing Classical music can help a ton and is proven through science to decrease your puppy’s heart rate.
- Breathwork: Your own calm breathing can be calming to your puppy. Take slow, deep breaths, and your pup may pick up on the relaxed rhythm.
- Tellington TTouch: This gentle massage technique can be very soothing for some puppies. TTouch uses light circles and touches to promote relaxation.
Here’s how to combine these techniques to help your hyper puppy:
- Notice your pup’s energy: If your puppy is getting hyper, take a step back and assess the situation.
- Ground Yourself: Take a few slow, deep breaths yourself. Project a calm and relaxed demeanor.
- Create a Soothing Environment: Dim the lights, put on some calming music (optional), and provide a comfy bed or crate for your pup.
- TTouch (Optional): If your pup seems receptive, try some gentle TTouch on their chest or head.
- Ignore Hyper Behavior: Don’t give attention to barking, jumping, or mouthing when they’re hyper. This can inadvertently reward the unwanted behavior.
- Reward Calmness: When your puppy shows signs of settling down, praise them or offer a small treat. This reinforces calm behavior. A food oriented toy can help too! Chewing can relax your puppy.
Remember, consistency is key. By grounding yourself and using these techniques consistently, you can help your puppy learn to self-regulate and become a more relaxed companion.
