Four Legged Scholars LLC – Twinsburg – Dog Training
Do you want to cover your ears because your dog barks every time someone rings the doorbell or knocks? We completely get it.
You are also not alone. Laney, a black lab is a client of ours. She lives in Twinsburg. Dog training in her home is helping her be more peaceful and quiet with house guests.
This last week we worked on helping her become more quiet when someone knocks or rings the bell. Counter conditioning works well for this.
Give your dog a treat immediately after the door knock or bell. The correlation needs to be consistent and reliable.
Meaning that every time there is a door knock or ring that your dog gets a treat. If your dog keeps practicing barking, his behavior will not change.
The idea is that you are able to give your dog a treat before he barks. So the knock may need to be softer than normal. It usually works best if you start with knocking and progress to the doorbell later.
Laney is super smart so we were able to do both right away in Twinsburg. Dog training is happening so fast with her because she is quick to learn, and the owners are committed.
Here is example. Someone is outside the door. The owner is standing right by the front door. The person outside the door knocks one time.
The owner immediately gives his dog a treat. Repeat in a random fashion so that there are no predictable patterns with the door knocking.
This will work best if you have a sign on the door that says to call or text you BEFORE knocking. This will allow you time to be prepared with treats.
You can also tell all of your friends and family what you are doing so that they are on the same page.
Consistently works best. If you live in Twinsburg, dog training in your home can be done by Four Legged Scholars LLC. We are happy to help you get your dog to be quiet.
