Four Legged Scholars LLC – Dog Training – Ravenna and Surrounding Areas
Do you have multiple dogs in your household that are not listening to you? We understand the stress and help is here now.
Currently, we are doing dog training. Ravenna is where our client lives, and she has four dogs in her house.
One of the dogs is a Yorkshire Terrier that doesn’t know any commands and is having accidents on their carpet. They also have another Yorkshire Terrier that listens pretty well.
Then they have two beagles. One that has anxiety and is starting fights in their home. The other doesn’t know many commands at all.
Having multiple dogs in a house can create much chaos, and we wanted to help you create peace in your multi-dog household. Follow these tips and enjoy peace now.
Some of the tips require dog training. Ravenna owners will be pleased to know that happiness is just around the corner.
1.) It is important that all of your dogs know the very basic commands including: sit, leave it, stay, name recognition and come.
2.) Train each dog alone. Have the other dogs in a crate or in another room. During our dog training session today, we focused on Duckie.
By training each dog alone they are able to learn without being distracted by the other dogs.
It was fun today during our dog training. Ravenna friends will be impressed because Duckie learned how to sit, stay and potty outside.
3.) Once each dog can listen by himself. Have two of your dogs together and practice the basic commands above. Then have three of the dogs together and lastly, four.
Do not add another dog into the picture until your dog’s are listening well. You want the progression to be gradually.
4.) Teach your dogs to not jump. Jumping will increase anxiety and fighting in a household. When they jump. Turn your back and reward a nice sit instead.
5.) It is also important to work incorporate NILF (Nothing in Life is Free). This means that each dog must do something “good” before he gets what he wants.
A default sit works great. Your dogs will learn to sit before dinner, going outside, being pet, etc. As a result, whining, jumping and barking will lesson.
We stressed this today because we know it is so important for success dog training. Ravenna dog owner, Shelby, wants Louie (the anxious beagle) and her dogs to feel more relaxed. NILF creates just that!
6.) Teach each dog to wait at the door. Bolting out doors can increase conflicts. When your dog waits, the door opens. When he moves toward the door, shut it before he can get out. He will learn that waiting causes the door to open.
7.) Have each dog eat separately or to eat from their own food bowls. You will have healthier dogs because you can monitor how much they are eating.
You can tell if they are getting sick because you will be able to see that they are eating less food. Even still, you will decrease the chance of competitive fighting over food.
8.) “Leave it”, as stated above, will reduce competition between treats or food items dropped onto the floor. Teach your dogs to not just grab and fight over food that is dropped.
9.) Each dog needs to learn to respond to their name. We worked on this today during our dog training. Ravenna dog owner, Shelby, taught each of her dogs to respond to their names. Then she taught them a group word “dogs.”
When she says “Dogs sit” this means all of the dogs need to sit. If she says “Duckie sit,” then just Duckie needs to sit.
10.) If your dog’s fight over locations such as couches, beds or chairs, it is best to keep all of your dogs off of the furniture.
This will decrease the amount of work you will need to do because you won’t have to do as much dog training. Ravenna will feel more relaxed if you keep things simple.
I personally love this book by Patricia McConnell Feeling Outnumbered? How to Manage and Enjoy Your Multi-dog Household.
I also bought this great book by Nicole Wilde titled: Keeping the Peace: A Guide to Solving Dog-Dog Aggression in the Home.
Of course, if you need one – on – one help we are happy to teach you more knowledge to keep the peace in your house.
We do private dog training, Ravenna is in Portage County, and we also serve Geauga, Ashtabula and Trumbull counties.
