Four Legged Scholars LLC – Middlefield – Dog Training and Surrounding Areas
Do you avoid leash walks or dread them because your dog pulls? Maybe it is a dream of yours to get your dog to walk nicely on the leash.
You are not alone. Let’s give you some tips so you can create peace on your leash walks now.
We currently live in Middlefield. Dog training in people’s homes and in dog parks is our main focus.
Recently, we worked with a client, Rachel, in Garrettsville with a beagle named Max. He pulled on the leash with his nose to the ground. The owners avoided walking him.
The first time we took him out he was pulling me hard. I started with having the owners do a simple exercise inside. It works wonders.
With your dog on leash put a treat on the ground / floor out of your dog’s reach. Take quite a few steps backward.
Start walking toward the treat. Anytime your dog pulls toward the treat, back-up. Anytime the leash is loose keep walking forward.
Eventually, you will reach the treat with a loose leash. This is time to relish in the success, and let your dog eat the treat on the ground / floor.
Rachel practiced for an entire week with Max. The following week when I returned to Garrettsville, which is only 20 min away from Middlefield, dog training was very different.
Max was able to walk loosely on the leash outside! We also decided to make it easier on him by using a better motivator which was cheese. Yes, if your dog gets easily distracted outside there is nothing wrong with giving him a higher valued treats for good leash walking.
Rachel backed-up when Max pulled. When the leash was loose he received a click and some cheese. In fact, Max was so excited about the cheese that he began jumping.
We also only give him a treat when the leash was loose and all four feet of his were on the ground. Garrettsville and Middlefield, dog training is so much fun, and we are grateful to have worked with this family.
Max and this family learned quickly and had much success in just 4 sessions. You can have a dog that listens to you too! We serve the surrounding areas of Middlefield. Dog training will be tailored to your needs 🙂
The Dog Star Daily has other methods that work great for loose leash walking.
