Four Legged Scholars LLC – Dog Training – Chesterland and Surrounding Areas
Is your dog driving you crazy because your dog will not settle? We know how frustrating this can be, and we are here to help you. Let’s get your dog to settle now.
One way to help your dog to settle is to train him to “down”. Many dogs have hard time going into a “down” unless they are starting to relax.
Creating a “down stay” will prevent your dog from running around the house, barking, jumping on people etc.
Sammy, a Maltese, is having trouble laying “down”. We are working on dog training. Chesterland is where he lives.
For some dogs training “down” can be simple and for others it can be challenging.
Many dogs will follow a lure from a stand or sit position to go into a “down”. Put a treat in your hand and draw an imaginary line from your dogs muzzle to the ground.
As your dog follows the treat, many dogs will go into a down position. Then c/t (click and treat)
For Sammy, this isn’t working. We are doing more extensive dog training. Chesterland dog owners will benefit from this knowledge.
Get something that your dog can crawl under. For smaller dogs like Sammy, I like to use a leg.
Shape your dog to go underneath your leg until your dog is gently forced to go into a down position because he is going underneath something.
If you hold your leg too high this won’t work because you can crawl all the way through or go under while still standing.
First c/t when your dog sticks his head underneath your dog. Then c/t when he goes a bit farther underneath.
Once he is about halfway under he will probably choose to put his butt down and be in a “down” position. Make sure you c/t and treat this.
You want to make sure that you start to only reward your dog when he fully goes in a down position while going underneath the leg so that he doesn’t learn to crawl under your leg instead.
The next step is to get your dog to learn the command “down.” Right before your dog goes into the “down” position say “down.”
Once your dog gets this try it without your leg and see if your dog will down. Repeat the leg if your dog doesn’t get it yet.
The process will pay off with dog training. Chesterland visitors will be impressed that your dog can now “down!”
Now gradually reward your dog for staying in the down position for longer and longer time periods until he can stay.
