Four Legged Scholars LLC – Puppy Training – Aurora and Surrounding Area
Did you just a get a new puppy and are you feeling overwhelmed? We understand this feeling and can help you feel peace again.
I always tell my clients that knowing the training tools is only 10% of puppy training.
Aurora clients of mine know that 90% of puppy training is your mindset and your emotions.
So you guessed it this post will be about your mind and emotions.
Here are a few tips to help you:
1.) Be in the moment. Thinking too much about frustrating past behavior and how it will happen again in the future will bring much stress into your life.
Enjoy the moments you have especially the ones when you are connecting with your puppy and are happy.
2.) When you get frustrated taking a break is okay. Go ahead and put your puppy in his crate.
Use this time to breath, change your thoughts and regain peace again.
3.) Changing your thoughts is paramount to success. Your thoughts affect your progress. Thoughts that offer curiosity, wonder, and flexibility are best.
Thoughts like these below are unproductive:
- I can’t do this.
- My puppy is stubborn.
- My puppy won’t listen.
- My puppy will never listen.
- This behavior is bad.
- I can’t deal with this.
These thoughts are normal but the trick is to open yourself to thoughts that are less black and white.
So work on shifting from the thoughts above to the thoughts below.
Thoughts like these are more productive:
- How can I find a solution?
- I wonder how we can be a team?
- I am curious to know why my puppy is doing this.
- I wonder what I can do differently.
- I wonder how I can encourage more of the behaviors that I like.
These thoughts open your mind to think of solutions and to work as a team with your puppy.
4.) Changing behavior takes time. Celebrate even the smallest victories. Our minds are wired to focus on the negative.
You need to be aware of this and choose differently. If your puppy normally bites you when you pet him and he stops biting you even for just 1 minute this is celebration.
When training a puppy, I see small behavioral changes in the beginning. When we focus on these small change, we feel happy and full of gratitude. This opens are brain to create more positive change and growth.
As a result, it is much easier to keep implementing the training and then keep celebrating the small shifts in behavior which over time become a huge leap in behavior change.
I love focusing on puppy training. Aurora is where many of clients live. The ones that are most successful are the ones that can break training into steps to form a terminal behavior.
5.) Get help. If you are struggling with this, talk with friends that are positive and can help you see gratitude and happiness in your life. It might also be helpful to train your puppy with friends.
Of course, Four Legged Scholars LLC, Puppy Training, Aurora can help you too.
