I believe the UltiMutt Inn is the best dog boarding and daycare in Burton, OH. I, Johanna Teresi, owner of Four Legged Scholars, received a tour from the owner, Sonja Paetzel.
I use to live in Salt Lake City, UT and I worked at numerous dog boarding and daycare facilities. So personally I know what creates a good or bad facility for your dog. Ultimutt is the best I have ever seen in my life and it’s basically a Disney World for dogs.
Safety, First, at UltiMutt Dog Boarding and Daycare in Burton, OH
First the daycare is set up to be safe for your dog. Many daycares have fights that need to be broken often. At Ultimutt, Sonja creates a safe environment for your dog. She only has 15 dogs in a playgroup at a time. She also separates the dog according to personality, size and age. This causes fights be more a rarity here.
Her daycare staff is trained for at least a month. They know how to read dog behavior and how to prevent dog fights from happening. The staff knows how interrupt play that is increasing in arousal before a fight happens. They watch for warning signs. The staff does gate management and redirects any bad behavior. They also do obedience games including come and gate management. All of these things, drastically reduce the chance of fights and keep your dogs safe.
If you bring your dog to this facility, your dog would start with one dog first rather than the whole group. The numbers of dog are gradually increased. If at anytime your dog is stressed, the process is slowed down. If needed, your dog may also be put in a quieter group. The ultimate goal is for your dog to have a good time and be safe!
The staff is well trained and are required to have the following on them at all times:
- A walkie or radio to get help if needed
- An Ultimutt iphone to take pictures
- A treat pouch and treats. The dogs do fun obedience games.
- A slip lead
The building that has two floors has ramps instead of stairs. This allows for easy mobility for your dogs too. So cool!
Lastly, in the worst case scenario her staff is actually trained to break up dog fights. Sonja learned under Michael Shikashio who specializes in dog aggression. So they even have bite and fight kits. However, these are rarely needed.
Your Dog Will Have a Blast with a Variety of Enrichment Options
Ultimutt dog boarding and daycare in Burton, OH has at least 12 yards! Many of them are outdoors to increase enrichment for your dog. Smelling and exploring is enhanced for your dog here. The sensory yard has tunnels, bridges, and even plants that are safe for your dogs to smell / explore. To ad extra fun, the staff hides treats in this yard.
What does a typical day entail? The staff is required to do 2-3 different yard rotations during each shift. This allows your dogs to explore and have a great time. Your dog will have a morning playtime. Then a midday break in a suite to rest. After, the rest, your dog gets playtime again.

Different Areas for Different Dogs
Ultimutt will separate your dog with dogs that match his or her personality and size. There are over 12 yards, a small dog area, a pool, indoor areas, outside yards, a sniff room, places for senior dogs, and more.
There is a large small dog area. It has indoor and outdoor area. The outdoor area also has shade canopies. with a variety of rooms, the smalls dogs can be separated too.
Senior or older dogs get to play too and are put in a groups that match their personality. Many of them enjoy the sniff room. This room is full of toys where the staff can hide treats for the dogs to find. Generally, only one dog at a time uses the sniff room. So it’s great for dogs that want alone time.
The yards are huge and some range up to 1.5 to 2 acres. This allows for dogs to receive plenty of exercise.
They even have a pool. It is closed from December to spring so that no dogs get sick in the cold weather. It is often used in the summer. Many dogs enjoy jumping off the side of the pool. Eight dogs or less use the pool at the same time.
When it’s too cold to go outside, there is an indoor play area that is heated. If some dogs need to cool off, there is ir conditioning . Suites / kennels are in the room too.If needed, these can be used for timeouts. There is an outdoor potty area attached to this room.
