Does your dog struggle at listening to anything that you? We totally understand your frustration and you are not alone. We can definitely help you.
Currently, we are teaching a group obedience course at the Garrettsville Village Park which is near Kent, Ohio. Dog training is of course our main focus for our clients. We have two Australian Shepherds and a Labrador mix in our group obedience class. All of the dogs arrived at obedience class super hyper and not wanting to listen to their owners at all.
Buckley (from Bedford, Ohio), the Australian Shepherd was barking at every dog he saw in class. Oakley (from Nelson, Ohio), the other Australian Shepherd was barking at Buckley because they were brothers, and he wanted to play with Buckley. The Labrador, Carley (from Brimfield, Ohio), immediately began barking when he got out of the car and wanted greet the dogs. None of the dogs wanted to listen to a single command from their owners and were not being obedient.
I spaced the dogs apart to calm them so they would have the opportunity to be more obedient. Once they were farther away from each other, the owners began rewarding their dogs for settling down. After a few more minutes, we closed the distance between Oakley and Carley to just a few feet. Buckley feels uncomfortable and barks often when he is close to other dogs so his job was to remain far away and get more calm before moving closer. We had reach the point where all of the dogs were showing obedience. Garrettsville, Ohio residents would have been impressed.
Oakley, the Australian Shepherd and Carley, the Labrador made fast progress. In just one class they both learned to sit, down, watch, settle and target. These commands were new to both dogs and they quickly learned them.
Target is a cool command where the dog learns to touch his muzzle to the owner’s hand. It is used to get the dog into a stand or to move the dog to a certain location such as to your right or left.
It was amazing watching the owners look so stressed at the beginning of class and watch how they became more confident and relaxed as their dogs began to listen to them.
Buckley, the other Australian Shepherd did wonderful. He responded well to the basic obedience commands as well. His owner Amber, did a great job at closing the distance slowly so that Buckley remained calm for rest of class. In fact, she closed the distance by 1/3 rd in just one hour.
We are are all looking forward to the next 3 weeks of this group obedience dog training class (near Kent, Ohio in Garrettsville).
