Four Legged Scholars LLC – Dog Training – Nelson and Surrounding Areas
Are you excited about Halloween? If yes, that is great. Just remember that your dog is probably not equally excited. Many dogs find Halloween unpredictable and scary.
Imagine traveling to another planet and seeing weird aliens dressed in crazy scary costumes. If you weren’t feeling scared, you probably would be feeling uncomfortable.
Your dog is another species so living with you especially on Halloween can be like traveling to another planet. As a result, we want to help your dog feel comfortable on Halloween.
These tips do not involve much dog training. Nelson owners will find them easy to implement. If applied your dog will be happier on Halloween.
1.) When you go trick or treating please leave your dog at home. He will probably feel uneasy seeing tons of strange costumes running around.
Socialization can help your dog be comfortable with a mailman, police officer but no amount of dog training (nelson) will prepare your dog to deal with the unknowns of Halloween.
2.) Do not dress your dog into a costume unless he actually loves it. Your dog will let you know if he doesn’t want to wear a costume by showing some classic behaviors such as running away, freezing, avoiding you, lowering his tail, lowering his ears, or lowering his whole body.
He may also turn his head away from you when you have the costume out. Most dogs will probably show calming signals.
If your dog is showing these, skip the costume wearing phase.
3.) After trick or treating put the candy up high where your dog cannot get it. Your dog can die from eating chocolate or at least get really sick.
Xylitol is also toxic to dogs and is in some candy too.
4.) If you have trick or treaters coming to your house keep your dog in safe location away from the front door. Your dog doesn’t want to see the crazy costumes.
He will feel better if he doesn’t have to hear everything. No need to do dog training. Nelson dog owners can just put their dog behind a close door and turn relaxing meditation music or a white noise machine.
You can also choose to have your dog stay at someone else’s house that doesn’t have trick or treaters. If someone else is watching your dog, make sure they keep your dog supervised and are responsible.
5.) You might be busy on Halloween and around Halloween, remember your dog needs positive attention.
Giving him some food oriented toys can help occupy him and give him something to do.
Stay away from feeding your dog his food bowl and instead create fun activities with his food such as putting his food in a Buster Cube.
You can also give your dog bully sticks, Kongs, antlers, and stuffed cow hooves. Chewing is a great way for your dog to relieve stress.
5.) Lastly, remember to enjoy yourself. Keep things enjoyable for your dog too. Rather than forcing him to do things that he doesn’t like.
