Four Legged Scholars LLC – Ravenna – Dog Training and Surrounding Areas in Ohio
Are you frustrated because your dog is destroying your home through chewing? Do you feel stressed because your home is a mess due to your dog? You are not alone. We understand. Let’s help you.
Recently, we received a call from a resident in Ravenna. Dog training is what she wanted. She is struggling with an American Eskimo that is chewing chairs, sheets and valuable objects in her home.
We haven’t gone to her home yet, and we realize that many others are struggling with intense chewing in their homes. Here are some awesome tips to help you!
1.) Make sure your dog is getting plenty of exercise. If you live in Ravenna and surrounding cities there are not many areas to take your dog off-leash. However, at the Garrettsville Village Park, there is a fenced in off-leash dog park now. This is a great place to let your dog run off some steam.
Having your dog wear a backpack can help him burn off calories and give him more exercise.
Joining a dog sport like ralley, scent work, flyball, dock diving, or agility can also help.
2.) Teach your dog to relax. Yep you might think I am crazy, but when I had my last dog, I meditated with him daily for months. He was such a highly aroused border collie that I wanted him to learn to be “zen.”
Put your dog in the same room as you. Then turn on relaxing music and give your dog a food oriented toy to chew on (a bully stick, Kong, cow hoof, pig ear, etc.). Now focus on slowing down your breathing. Your dog will eventually feel your energy and begin to relax.
This takes repetition. As humans cannot learn to mediate and relax overnight neither can dogs. However, you won’t regret doing this. It is very different than dog training. Ravenna residents will become impressed that your dog has learned to decompress.
3.) Reward your dog constantly for good behavior. Stop focusing on everything that your dog is doing wrong. Give him attention when he is chewing on his toys and appropriate objects.
4.) Proof your home. Put small objects behind closed doors and out of your dog’s reach so he isn’t tempted to chew on them.
5.) Give your dog a huge variety of toys to chew on that change every day or every other day. Do NOT have the same toys out every day. Change them. Food oriented toys will occupy your dog for longer time periods.
6.) Stop feeding your dog in a food bowl. Instead, use his kibble in food oriented toys such as Buster Cubes and for training. By keeping the food out of the bowl, you will be forced to think of fun games and training to do with your dog. This will keep your dog active and thinking. These things will decrease chewing.
7.) Spray bitter apple or bitter orange on furniture every 2-3 hours. It tastes bad and your dog won’t want to chew on it.
8.) Put your dog in a crate or in a proofed room when you cannot watch him. Leaving him unsupervised gives him room to destroy your house.
9.) Train your dog. A dog that is trained is more obedient and less stressed. They have learned to control their impulses. Invest in dog training. Ravenna has many nearby cities with trainers. Four Legged Scholars LLC, Ravenna, Dog Training is one of them.
