Four Legged Scholars LLC – Obedience – Twinsburg
Are you struggling with a dog that just doesn’t listen to you? We know how you feel. We want to help.
Seiki, my border collie, was a great dog. We both benefited from a command called “target.”
Last night, I worked on obedience. Twinsburg is where my current client lives. She has a Black Labrador name Laney. Because Laney needs to pay more attention to her owners we trained her “target.”
“Target” is great because it teaches your dog to touch his nose to your hand. It can look silly, yet the applicability of the command is amazing. Here are some great reasons to use targeting training.
1.) You can exercise your dog indoors. Laney’s family and I stood in a circle. We had 4 people and each person took a turn asking Laney to “target.”
Between the four of us Laney got tons of exercise. This command can be used for more than just obedience. Twinsburg families will be happy to know that they don’t have to take their dog outside to exercise him.
2.) It is a great way to move your dog. If you need to move your dog to specific location you can do it! I did this a ton with Seiki.
I hiked with him in Utah and wanted him to move him off the trail to make space for others. “Target” worked well.
3.) It can take place of a “leave it” command. Laney barks at people and dogs on leash walks. Her owners want her to practice more obedience. Twinsburg has many streets for them to walk her.
However, at this time they can’t walk her easily because she is strong and reactive. When she gets triggered and wants to bark the owners can use “target” to redirect her attention back on them. They can also use “target” increase the distance between their black lab and the trigger.
4.) It can take the place of “come.”
5.) You can use “target” to train loose leash walking.
