Four Legged Scholars LLC, Dog Training, Hiram, Ohio and Surrounding Areas
At Four Legged Scholars, Dog Training, Hiram, Ohio we know the stress that dogs can feel during Halloween. Because you love your dog, we are sure that you want your dog to feel comfortable instead of stressed-out during Halloween.
Please keep the following tips in mind so that you can ensure comfort for your both you and your dog.
1.) Even the most obedient dogs may feel stressed when they see numerous Halloween costumes. Anytime a dog sees something that is alien to them, they are more likely to bite. Of course some dogs have genetics that just let them go with the flow with almost anything.
This is definitely not true for most dogs. When you take your children trick-or-treating keep your dog at home. He probably isn’t going to enjoy seeing the kids’ costumes prancing around the neighborhood.
2.) Candy can be toxic for your dog. Xylitol and chocolate are especially bad for your dog so keep these away from your dog. “Leave it” is a great command to practice when performing dog training. Hiram, Ohio is near where our current dog training class is located.
In our group obedience course, we always train “leave it” because it teaches dogs to turn their heads away from food instead of consuming it.
3.) When trick treaters come to your home your dog maybe stressed. If your dog usually barks when people knock or ring the bell at your home, it is time to consider a set-up that will be more peaceful for your dog on trick-or-treating night.
Here are some options. Have your dog stay at a friend’s house that will not have trick or treaters. Stand on your front porch or your front yard to hand out candy.
Keep your dog in enclosed room where he is less likely to hear the noise. When he is in this room help him be calm by playing Classical Music and giving your dog plenty of food oriented toys such as Kongs.
4.) Reconsider dressing-up your dog. Not all dog’s enjoy this. If your dog shows many calming signals or has a stiff body when he is dressed up, he is stating that dressing up isn’t working for him. Honor his decision to remain a dog on Halloween.
5.) Learn about stress signs that your dog may show. Remove him from any stressful situations or you teach him to be more calm through dog training. Hiram, Ohio and surrounding areas has many dog trainers to choose from if you need professional help.
Learn what your dog looks like when he stressed. Here are some good dog body language pictures.
We always advise a positive dog trainer or a reward-based dog trainer.
