Four Legged Scholars LLC – Hiram – Dog Training and Surrounding Areas
Do you care about your dog’s safety and want him to stay in the yard? We completely understand how important it is for you to feel peace while your dog has ultimate freedom.
Since Ohio has much country, many people invest in invisisble fences. It is cheap and can cover a large area of your yard. Also you don’t have to worry about zoning.
There is a lot of space in Hiram. Dog training is minimal with invisible fences so it seems like a great option.
When you go buy an invisible fence there is much they do not tell you.
1.) It can malfunction because it is electric. There are tons of wind storms in Ohio so you cannot depend on its reliability.
2.) Some dogs aren’t phased by the shock and will run through the fence multiple times.
I had an invisible fence near Hiram. Dog training was done with our fence and my border collie still ran through it.
Eventually, she stopped and by that time the shock had left a really bad impression.
3.) It can cause your dog to become aggressive or fearful. In fact, my border collie did just that.
She got so aggressive that she ran through the fence and bit our mailman. I actually worked with an aggressive dog near Hiram. Dog training helped a ton with this dog and one of the problems was the invisible fence.
Anytime you are using pain to get a dog to stop doing a behavior you can instill psychological stress and emotional problems.
4.) Some of them will shock your dog when he comes back into the yard. So your dog may not able to come back home if he runs out.
5.) It doesn’t keep other animals out. An aggressive dog, animal etc. can easily enter your yard.
Your dog may have trouble escaping. An actual fence will keep other animals out for the most part
6.) Your dog may become sensitive to loud beeping noises. Many invisible fences will have a warning beep before the dog gets shocked.
Because the beep is associated with being shocked, it isn’t a positive noise to a dog. Your dog may become scared of a clicker, smoke alarm or other sudden noises.
So what are some alternatives.
1.) Fence your yard. There are many options. Wooden fences or more expensive and metal /aluminum fences can work just fine.
Check the following places: Best Buy Fence, FIXR, and R and T Fence You can also go to fencing companies and use their lumber from past fences that they are throwing out. Many of them will give it to you for free.
There is also a cool program called Beyond Fences that will help you get a fence for free or with minimal money.
Pintrest has a great do it yourself page on how you can you build your fence yourself. There are many options and choices they give here so check it out!
Go Fund Me is also a great way to raise money to build a fence. I actually have used it for my dogs and have had many friends that have used it with great success.
2.) You can also fence a smaller portion of your yard so that your dog has an outdoor kennel.
3.) Keep your dog indoors and only let him outside supervised.
4.) Exercise your dog at dog parks. There are many dog parks near Hiram. Dog training must be done to have good etiquette at dog parks so it will give you extra interaction with your dog too.
The Garrettsville Village Park now has a fenced in dog park.
5.) Teach your dog tricks and obedience. This does give your dog plenty of mental stimulation and can tire your dog.
6.) Join a dog sport such as rally, flyball, nosework, agility, etc.
