Four Legged Scholars LLC – Aurora – Obedience and Surrounding Areas
Are you feeling frustrated because your dog jumps often? This can be extremely stressful with house guests.
My last dog Seiki, use to jump like crazy. It was stressful for me, and I am an Aurora dog trainer. However, I worked often with him, and he learned to settle quickly.
Millie lives in Aurora. Obedience is our main focus at the front door because she jumps on people. Millie is a cute Boxer mix and loves people.
To train settle at the door, we trained Millie to sit away from the door and to hold the sit as the owner opens the door.
Do this by asking your dog to sit. Then take a step away from your dog. If your dog holds the sit, c/t (click and treat). If your dog breaks the sit return to your dog and remind him to sit. Then take a smaller step back.
Repeat this same process as you gradually move farther and farther away from your dog and closer and closer to the door. If this is the first time training this behavior don’t expect to do this entire training process in one session.
You will have more success with Aurora obedience if you break things down and progress forward each day.
Once you reach the door, rather than opening the door right away, touch the door knob and if your dog holds the sit c/t. Then, move to opening the door a tiny crack and c/t. Progress to opening the door farther and farther.
Each time you c/t I would recommend that you close the door and return to your dog to give him the treat. Repeat this process until your dog can hold the sit as you open the door. I would also recommend starting with no one standing outside the door.
This will make training much easier in Aurora. Obedience is more successful if you start easy and work your way up to harder levels. Once your dog can sit and stay as the door is opened and no visitors is standing there then you can progress to visitors.
When it is time for the visitor to walk inside your house, I recommend that you immediately return to your dog for a while and remind him to sit. Give him constant clicks and treat to help him hold the sit. The hardest part is when the visitor walks into the house.
If your dog is behind a second gate have him a hold a sit before you let him out. Repeat the same process above. Opening the gate and if he holds the sit c/t. If he breaks the sit, close the gate. Start by opening the gate a crack then progress to opening it farther.
Once you are ready to release your dog from holding the sit stay, be ready to have the visitor turn his back if your dog jumps on them. When your dog sits, c/t.
By having your dog sit and wait as the visitor enters the house you will decrease jumping overall. Your house guests will be impressed in Aurora. Obedience with settle will bring much more peace and happiness in your home.
You can also take it to the next level and teach your dog to lay on his bed as visitors enter your home.
