Four Legged Scholars LLC – Dog Training – Garrettsville and Surrounding Areas
Do you feel stressed when you walk your dog because he pulls on the leash? We know your frustration and your desire to have peaceful leash walks.
We assure you that you are not alone and there is a solution. Let’s create peaceful leash walks now.
Currently, we are working with Joseph with Otto on leash training. Garrettsville is where they live. Otto was at the point where Joe could walk him on leash. Otto pulled in all directions and this was driving Joe crazy.
So we are working on dog training. Garrettsville neighbor’s are watching Joe practice leash walking in his backyard. Otto is German Shepherd that is only 1 year old.
As a result, he has a ton of energy. Joseph is older and has to walk slow. As a result, Otto has to learn to walk very slow.
The best way to start with leash training is to walk your dog in easy environments. Otto was struggling with walking on a loose leash in the backyard. As a result, this is where we are practicing the most for now.
To make the situation easier we are using a front hook harness. Otto isn’t fond of the clicker so we are using the word “yes” as a marker.
Joe says the command “easy” then takes a step forward. If Otto is walking with a loose leash he then says “yes” and treats him.
If he pulls on the leash Joe guides him back to his side by pulling backward on the leash. The front hook harness guides Otto back to Joe’s side.
Joe is also working on treating Otto near the seam of his pants so that Otto doesn’t cross in front of him.
There is nothing worse than training your dog to do the wrong behavior as you practice dog training. Garrettsville owners would not have been impressed with Otto tripping Joe.
Lastly, Joe is working on continually walking forward as he is treats Otto. When he stops to treat him Otto keeps plowing forward. It works better for Joe to keep walking since his pace is slow.
I am hoping this helps other dog owners that may walk a bit slow during their dog training. Garrettsville has plenty of dogs that are owned by older people.
