Four Legged Scholars LLC – Aurora – Dog Training
Are you struggling with a dog that is nervous around new people? We understand how stressful this can be.
In the past month, we have had three clients that have had fear issues with people. As a result, we wanted to let you know you are not alone. We can help you.
Many of our clients have been near Aurora. Dog training has helped them, and their dogs are more comfortable with people.
We have a client in Twinsburg and Garrettsville. A past client of ours was in Manuta. Two are Black Labrador Retrievers and one is a Blue Heeler.
Each dog is different. As a result, when we are dealing with these clients near Aurora, dog training techniques are specialized to that particular dog. There is a basic concept that will work with any dog that has fear issues.
Making the human feel more positive to the dog. Treats work great for this. I love this technique, and it is called counter conditioning.
Pair the human / visitor with positive things, and the dog then begins to like the human. Generally, it works best if the human is performing calming signals.
This means the human looks like he/she is ignoring the dog and is generally sitting instead of standing.
It is best to do this with the dog being on leash with the owner. Put the dog out of sight in a closed room. Have the human / visitor enter the house and sit down performing calming signals.
Let the dog out on leash with the owner. As soon as the dog notices the human / visitor give the dog a treat. Then keep giving the dog treats while the human remains in the sight of the dog.
Take breaks (put your dog back in the room so he is out of sight from the human). Bring the dog back out and pair the dog with more treats once he sees the human again. The entire time the dog is out, treats should be given.
Your dog should be far enough away so that he is fairly calm and NOT barking or growling. If barking and growling are happening then the dog is too close to the visitor.
It is best that distance is created if this is the case. If you have enough distance your dog will remain more calm.
This is important for success for clients that live in Aurora, dog training can get messed up if you give your dog treats for growling and barking. The dog can get more stressed.
Once your dog is calm then you gradually decrease the distance repeating the above process.
We recommend you consult with a professional in Aurora, dog training isn’t easy when you are dealing with human fear issues.
