Are you tired of your dog running off? Do you feel that you have to run after your dog to catch him? Let’s get your dog to “come” now and to “come” every time. At Four Legged Scholars Dog Training (Northeast Ohio) we want you feel peace of mind with your dog.
Imagine being at the dog park, when it is time to leave, your dog comes to you. If you live on a farm, see your dog coming to you when it is time to go into the house. Maybe you walk your dog on leash all of the time because you don’t trust your dog’s “come” command.
Your dog can learn to come to you and love it!
Every week, I volunteer at the Portage County Dog Warden. I have been doing dog training with Clyde for quite some time. When I call him he runs to me! He is so excited to “come.” Let’s get your dog to do that too!
Start with no distractions and begin dog training. Northeast Ohio is very distracting so the best place to start is inside your home. Get a really special treat that your dog will love such as cheese, cooked chicken or hot dogs. Go up to your dog and show your dog the yummy treats. Hold the treats in your closed hand near your dog’s muzzle.
Then with your back to your dog, say “come” and run away from your dog. Your dog will want to follow you. Run across the length of the room in your home. Now stop running. C/T (click and treat) while you are holding your dog’s collar. You are going to give your dog the special treat for 20-30 seconds. You don’t need to use large pieces.
Crumb sized pieces will work! Practice this numerous times until your dog seems to know to “come”: to you. Then try the command as you are standing away from your dog (without running) and watch him come running to you! C/T. Remember to give 20-30 sec of that special treat.
As your dog gets this, start asking him to come in an area that is a bit more distracting and progress to areas of more and more distractions.
You can learn more about the basics of training come here and more about the advanced tools on training come. We want you to have success with your dog training. Northeast Ohio has much of open land, and you want to feel confident that your dog will “come” running to you!
Happy Training,
