Elementary Obedience Group Dog Training Classes in Chardon
I am so excited to be offering group puppy and dog training classes in Chardon. I love teaching group classes. I started teaching them in 2002 in Salt Lake City, Utah. I grew up in Ohio, and I wanted to move back home to be closer to my family, especially, while, raising my daughter, Iris. As a result, in 2016, I moved back to Ohio. While living with my parents for two years, in Garrettsville, I expanded dog training business to Ohio.
When I move to live in an apartment with my daughter, my business progressed to Middlefield. After, years of mostly doing private dog training, I decided it was time to do group classes again! I began doing my first indoor group obedience courses at the Geauga YMCA. After a few months of time, the Geauga YMCA decided to let outside contractors go. I looked around and was accepted to do classes through the Chardon Recreation Center. Now I am offering group dog training classes in Chardon, Ohio.
The courses are held at the Chardon Living Memorial Park, 220 Basquin Drive. The park is beautiful. It has a playground and sled hill. However, my courses will be held indoors so that the courses can continue disregarding the weather. During the summer months, the building is used for summer camp. During the rest of the season, the building is open.
My Elementary Obedience group dog training course will be held in Chardon on Tuesday evenings from 5-6 PM. The course is geared to teaching basic obedience, while also, emphasizing that your mindset and emotions affect how your dog responds to you.
What will You and Your Dog Learn in the Group Dog Training Classes in Chardon?
The goal is to help you have a dog that listens to you reliably in your home. Imagine feeling secure and confident that your dog will listen to basic commands at home.
The course is broken into 5 weeks and each week, we meet for one hour. The first class, dogs are left at home so that we can focus on the human end of dog training. This allows you, the human, to learn some basic skills so that when the dogs do come, the class can be a bit calmer. My goal to make dog training fun in low stress environment.
In this course you will learn the following commands:
- Sit
- Down
- Stay
- Settle instead of jumping
- House training
- Go to your bed and stay there until released
- Leave it to stop chewing and play biting
- Wait at the door to prevent your dog from bolting out the door
- Come with low level distractions
- Loose leash walking within the indoor class setting
How Old Does My Dog Have to Be to Attend the Group Dog Training Classes in Chardon?
Your dog can start as young as 8 weeks. Many people ask if their dog is too young to train. As soon as you get your puppy, you can start training. Once their eyes are open and they are walking, they are learning. Seize the moment to train your puppy when he / she is young because puppies are like sponges.
Are you worried that your puppy might get sick? No fret, because the dog’s are required to be vaccinated. The likely hood of getting sick is not high especially if your puppy is up to date with their booster vaccinations. Your puppy is required to be up to do with their vaccines for their age to attend. Your puppy is at a great learning age. Take advantage of training your puppy when he or she is young.
Can an old dog learn too? Absolutely, I have trained older dogs. In fact, it is never too late to train. An older dog does have habits, and we can change those habits through training.
Is it safe to have a mixture of older and younger dogs in the classes? Yes, all of the dog are required to be on leash and are spaced apart. I do NOT encourage greetings between dogs. We want a safe environment so everyone has their own space with their dog or puppy in the class.
What Training Methods are Used?
The training methods I use are proven through science to work and to be healthy for your dog emotionally and psychologically. I train using positive reinforcement. Whatever you reward will increase in frequency. When there are behaviors that we dislike we can train and alternate behavior or redirect the behavior.
For example, if your dog jumps, you can turn your back from the jumping and reward the sit. The alternate behavior is “sit.” If your dog is barking at other dogs in the class, I can help you train your dog to leave it. I will help your dog to look away from the other dogs in the class, and back to you. This will redirect your dog’s attention from the other dogs and back onto you. As a result, over time, your dog will be more quiet.
Can Children or Other Adults Take the Course with My Dog?
Yes, children are welcome in my classes. As long as the child can sit in a chair and not pet the dogs in the class, they are welcome to attend. Due to safety reasons, Children are not allowed to wonder in the group class. I don’t have an age limit, instead, your child’s attendance is based on their behavior.
Your child has to have an adult to attend the class. The adult must relaying what I am teaching to the child because the class is not specially geared to teaching children.Throughout the years, I have had many children attend my group classes. It was great having the whole family involved.
I have also had multiple adults attend my group courses. So your partner, pet sitter, friends etc. may attend with your dog. The more the merrier. We want everyone on the same page. This increases success with training your dog. If different people come every week and they don’t know what we have covered in the past weeks, they will be confused. If If possible, have one consistent person come for the full 5 weeks.
What If My Dog Gets Too Distracted?
Many dogs easily get distracted in my group dog training classes in Chardon, and that is okay. We can still help your dog focus and learn. However, we do want to make sure that your dog isn’t overly stressed in a group setting. Some dogs do better with private training because they get too stressed around other dogs and people.
Train with High Powered Dog Treats
**However if your dog is only minor distracted there are many actions we can take to lower your dog’s stress level and help them learn in a group class setting. I have found changing the motivation can make a huge difference. Basically, we need to find a treat that your dog loves even when he / she is more distracted. Normal dog treats sometimes don’t cut it when dogs are more stressed. This is because their appetite goes down when they are more stressed. Imagine being a bit stressed out and then someone offers your favorite feed. You may be more likely to eat when your favorite food is in front of you. As a result, the typical treats that your dog may work for may not cut it. You may need to move to treats that they actually loves to a high degree. Think of these as high powered dog treats. There are so many options. Here are some treats that I find many dogs loves:
- Hotdogs
- String Cheese or Any Cheese
- Wet dog food. Ball it up, put it on a baking tray and bake it.
- Freshpet Dog Food
- Lunchmeat
- Chicken
Create Distance and Use Barriers
The closer your dog is to the other dogs, the more distracted your dog will be. There are times where I space a dog farther away from the other dogs in the class. The dog is not in a time out. Instead, I am trying to use distance to help the dog be more relaxed. The space away from the other dogs, allows your dog to be more calm.
Barriers can also be used. This can be a wall or a moveable blockade. Your dog can go behind this barrier to take breaks. This will decrease your dog’s line of sight of the other dogs. This can also help your dog to be more calm as well.
When your dog is calmer, your dog can learn better. A stressed dog has cortisol firing and an amygdala that is firing. This shuts down the cortex or the thinking part of the brain. We want a calmer dog so that the cortex of the brain actually works well for thinking.
Slow Petting or Tellington Touch
Again a calm dog can learn much better. So anything that we can do calm down your dog will work wonders. I am certified in animal reiki. So I can actually do reiki on your dog during class as well. However, since it’s a group class, it would be just a short session. So I find it more helpful to get the owner involved too.
When you pet your dog, pet with slow and long pets. This helps relax your dog. Fast petting, will amp your dog’s energy up. Tellington Touch (T-Touch) works wonders. Linda Tellington Jones is the founder. I find the basic touch works best! Some dogs need just a minute or two of T-Touch, while others may need T-Touch to be done for 20 min or longer. Many times I have had clients that did T-Touch during the first class and then in future classes their dog needed T-Touch much less.
Click here for a video that explains how to do the T-Touch. Below is also a cilent of mine doing T-Touch.
Recently, in my group dog training class in Chardon, I had a client, Carry, that had a dog named Stella. Stella was fearful and was able to attend my group dog training class because Tellington Touch calmed her down so she could learn.
Training Your Dog to Pay Attention to You
It’s helpful for you to reward the good behavior. When your dog is focused on you, then he or she is going to pay attention to his / her environment less. First start by rewarding your dog for sitting quiety or looking towards you. Everytime your dog sits and is quiet click and treat. Everytime your dog looks towards you click and treat that. Whatever, you reward will increase in frequency. So overtime, your dog will sit and be quiet more. Your dog will also look at you more.
You also put a treat in your hand. Then put your hand directly in front of your dog muzzle. Make sure you have a yummy treat. Move your hand towards you. So your hand is moving from your dog’s muzzle back towards you. If your dog follows your hand, he will then be facing towards you. Click and treat when your dog is facing towards you. When your dog is following your hand with a treat it, it is called a lure. Luring is a great way to get your dog’s attention off of the other dogs in the class and back onto you.
These are the most common ways that I help my client’s get their dogs to pay attention to them in a busy group class.
I would love to see you in my Elementary Obedience Group Dog Training Course in Chardon. Remember puppies are welcome too. If you are interested go to this link to sign up! If the class is full contact me and I will let you know when the next class is starting. These classes are ongoing.

Once your dog has completed our basic Elementary Obedience Group Course in Chardon, you can progress to our next levels.
Junior Outdoor Leash Walking Course
This is time to train your dog in the real world! We work on training your dog to walk loosely and nicely on the leash in multiple outdoor settings at different Middlefield village parks. These parks can include: Mineral Lake, Eagle Creek Splash Pad Park, and Tare Creek Headwaters Trail. We also may meet at the Tractor Supply Store.
Every week we meet with our dogs on leashes. The dogs are spaced apart so each dog has his or her own space. Then we work on walking from point A to point B while actively training our dogs together.
I help you be consistent with the technique that you need to do repeatededly to get your dog to walk nicely on the leash such as changing directions everytime your dog pulls.
I also help teach your dog listen to basic commands when he or she is on leash with distractions such as leave, target and stay.
It’s important that you learn mental tools as well. Your mindset and emotions affect your consistency. I will help you gain a mindset of joy and peace on your leash walks.
Outdoor Senior Come Course
Your dog must complete the Junior Outdoor Leash Walking Course first. Do you worry that your dog will run off?

We will start with easy distractions and progress to harder distractions as the weeks progress. You will end up feeling more at peace because you feel more confident that your dog will come to you.
