Four Legged Scholars LLC – Puppy Training – Garrettsville
Are you struggling with a new puppy that is driving you crazy with his chewing behavior? We understand and we can help!
Here are some tips that will create more peace of mind in your home with your puppy.
1.) Proof your home. Place objects of value that you don’t want your puppy to chew on up high or behind closed doors. Your puppy doesn’t know yet what is a toy and what is not.
This will help prevent your puppy from learning to chew on items that have value to you like your cell phone, TV remote, iPad, etc.
2.) Spray items that you cannot move with bitter apple or bitter orange. This makes items taste bad and will steer your puppy away from them. The spray lasts about 2-3 hours so you will need to reapply it.
It works great on furniture because you cannot move it out of sight. You can purchase this at most pet stores.
3.) Have a variety of chew toys that change constantly. Change your puppy’s chew toys every day or every other day so that he doesn’t get bored. If the same ones are out all of the time your puppy will find other items to chew.
4.) Give your puppy plenty of attention when he is sitting or laying down and NOT chewing on anything. I just worked on puppy training. Garrettsville is where this pup lived.
We rewarded him for sitting with c/t (clicks and treats). Eventually, he chose to sit instead of chewing on shoe laces, socks etc. This was awesome. He loved sitting so much that we could have a whole conversation, and he wouldn’t chew on a thing. Instead, he just sat there.
5.) Give your puppy attention for chewing on his toys. Praise him when he chewing on items that you like him to chew.
6.) Of course do puppy training. Garrettsville owners will be impressed with how fast their puppies will learn. Train your puppy to “leave it.” Put a treat in your hand or on the ground.
Be ready to cover it up when your pup goes after it. As soon as your pup turns away from the treat, say “leave it” and c/t (click and treat). Generalize this command to multiple items.
7.) Redirect your puppy when he chose on forbidden items. When he goes after the coffee table or carpet, make a fun kissing noise or clap your hands.
As soon as your puppy turns and looks at you, c/t. Then redirect him to chew on one of his toys.
8.) Put your puppy in a crate when you cannot watch him. When you are out of sight you cannot perform puppy training. Garrettsville dog owners can find awesome crates at the Tractor Supply Store in Ravenna.
9.) If you get stuck hire a professional dog trainer. There are plenty of trainers that can help you with puppy training. Garrettsville has many cities nearby that have trainers that you can hire. We strongly recommend that you use a reward-based dog trainer.
