Are you struggling with a dog that drags you on leash walks? You are not alone and we can help. Let’s create peace on your leash walks now.
One of my new friends contacted me because she is struggling with her dogs. She was feeling fear and needed help with numerous tasks. She boldly requested help with walking her dogs.
She just has a newborn, a 5 year old son and an older stepson. It didn’t seem possible for her to walk the dogs in the cold winter with a newborn, and her stepson isn’t strong enough to handle her dogs.
She has two dogs. One is a pit bull named Buck and the other is a lab named Moxi. They are good dogs but they are extremely hyper. I was one of the few people that she trusted to handle her dogs.
When she was able to walk Buck she walked him on a prong collar because he pulled so hard. Sound familiar? Choker and prong collars are so easy to find in pet stores and definitely are recommend to many people including people in Ravenna. Dog training creates better results when positive methods are used.
However, when you are at your wits end and don’t know what else to try many people choose a choker or prong collar. Buck still pulled on the prong collar, and it was painful for him.
Buck’s owner had attempted a front hook harness and it didn’t work for Buck. In fact, it actually cut him underneath his arms. She didn’t have much time or money with a newborn to purchase other leash walking tools.
However, she was interested in a head collar. Luckily, I had some in my car that I kindly gave to her. One for each dog.
When I first put them on, Buck and Moxi had much resistance and were trying to get them off. I pulled upward on the leash to prevent them from being able to get them off and got the dogs out the door quickly to help change their focus from the head collar to a walk.
I walked them one at time and I was amazed how well the head collars worked!
After the dogs got use to the collars they were no longer pulling on our walk in Ravenna. Dog training hardly occurred. I honestly just put the collars on and guided them back a few times when they pulled.
I didn’t use a clicker, and I didn’t use treats. They just both naturally walked on the leash loosely!
Oh, and just so you know, I did walk each dog alone because they were too strong for me for me to walk together.
If you have a strong dog, I highly recommend that you check out a front hook harness. If that doesn’t work then check out a gentle leader, canny collar or Newtrix collar. A freedom harness works great too and can be combined with a head collar for a really strong dog.
You can have a leash attached to the head collar and another leash attached to the harness.
I hope this post gives you hope especially if you live in Ravenna. Dog training usually does need to occur with these leash walking tools. You can c/t (click and treat) when the leash is loose while walking your dog.
Of course if you live in Ravenna, dog training can be served by us. We can help you with professional private dog training in Ravenna and surrounding areas.
