Four Legged Scholars LLC – Obedience Newbury and Surrounding Areas
Are you struggling with a dog that bolts out the door?
We understand the stress and can help you get your dog stop this behavior.
Let’s create more peace in your life with your dog now.
When I am working on dog obedience Newbury clients have found “wait at the door” to be helpful.
Here are the steps to train “wait at the door.”
1.) Put your dog on a leash so that you are being safe with your dog. This way if your dog tries to run out the door you will not loose him.
Make sure you are holding the leash in your hand or have it attached to a secure object.
2.) Ask your dog to sit. Then touch the door knob. If your dog remains in a sit while you are training obedience with him, c/t (click and treat).
3.) Ask your dog to sit, and open the door a crack. If your dog remains in the sit, click. Then, shut the door and give your dog a treat.
4.) Ask your dog to sit, and open the door a bit farther. If your dog remains in the sit click. Next, shut the door and give your dog a treat.
5.) Ask your dog to sit. Open the door even farther. Again if your dog remains in the sit, click. Then, shut the door and give your dog a treat.
6.) Keeping progressing forward by opening the door farther and farther until your dog will sit while the door is all the way open.
Once you have done enough dog obedience training and your dog will remain in the sit, add a command such as “wait.”
Open the door all the way. Then, release your dog from the sit with a command such as “all done” and let your dog out the door.
When you practicing dog obedience training in Newbury, make sure that you are only moving to the next step when your dog is successful on the previous step.
As a result, you will stay on each step for awhile before progressing to the next step.
We have helped many people with “wait at the door” when training dog obedience. Newbury clients of ours have been super happy to have more peace in their lives.
