Four Legged Scholars LLC – Mantua – Dog Training and Surrounding Areas
Are you struggling with a dog that wants to bark, lunge, nip, or bite at visitors? We completely understand and can absolutely help you.
You are not alone. When I was a teenager, I had a cute border collie, named Shadow. We lived in Garrettsville, Ohio which is near Mantua. Dog training was something that I was just learning about.
Unfortunately, my border collie felt stress every time we have a visitor come into our yard. Shadow lived outside. At one point, she bit the mailman. I understand how emotionally it can be.
Recently, I received a call from Mantua. Dog training was what Allyson wanted. Her Terrier / Heeler mix was showing aggression toward visitors when they enter her home. Recently, Gunner, bit someone. She called me to get help.
I wanted to write this post about how to address this issue. First you want to pair visitors with good things. It is easy to want to yell at your dog, spray him with water, or pop him on the leash etc.
All of these things does not teach your dog obedience or an alternate response. These techniques do not make dog more calm either. They tend to be stressful for your dog.
It is better to begin by pairing the visitors with good things. Start with visitors that your dog has only minor stress toward. Have one visitor stand inside the door of your home with the door closed while your dog is behind closed doors.
Then bring your dog out on leash. He needs to be at a distance from the visitor where he can see the visitor and remain relatively calm with no barking.
As soon as your dog sees the visitor begin to give him treats. Then take him out of sight. When he is out of sight of the visitor the treats stop. Repeat this until he begins to be happy when he sees the visitor.
There are many more steps to this process and we want to make sure you that you can implement them safely.
As a result, we recommend that you consult a professional Mantua dog trainer. Four Legged Scholars LLC, Mantua, Dog Training can help you.
