Four Legged Scholars LLC – Rootstown – Dog Training and Surrounding Areas
When you walk your dog, do you feel embarrassed because your dog barks at people or dogs? This is a common issue, and you are not alone. We can absolutely help you. Let’s create more peaceful leash walks now.
Recently, we did a talk in Rootstown. Dog training, of course, was our focus. We talked to a Portage County dog 4-H group about how to get their dogs to be more calm and quiet.
During our talk, we discussed that when a dog barks on leash walks they are overwhelmed and are very aroused.
As a result, we need to set up training scenarios where the dog can learn. To start, you want to have a calm decoy (a dog or person) that your dog might want to bark toward.
Have the decoy be standing far from your dog so that your dog appears to be calm or calm enough to learn something new. Your dog will be with you on-leash. When your dog looks at the decoy take a step backwards and say “leave it.”
As soon as your dog looks toward you c/t (click and treat). Repeat this multiple times at the same distance away from the decoy until your dog can easily look back toward you when you say “leave it.”
Eventually, your dog will begin to look back toward you with just the “leave it” command and no step backwards .
When this happens, it is time to gradually decrease the distance. Start by moving 1-2 feet closer and repeat the “leave it” exercise above.
Once this new distance is easy for your dog to perform, you can move forward 1-2 feet closer again. Keep repeating this procedure gradually.
The video above shows a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that I worked on training “leave it” when the 4-H kids were walking around.
We were in large outdoor garage in Rootstown. Dog training generally takes practice and persistence. This particular dog caught on quickly and we were able to be super close to the people.
Remember you may have to start far away. The initial distance can be as much as 1-2 blocks away. The process is called systematic desensitization.
We are looking forward to helping dogs in Rootstown. Dog training is my profession and we are able to come to your home and personal help you and your dog.
