Four Legged Scholars LLC – Dog Training – Ravenna and Surrounding Areas
Do you feel anxiety when your dog is possessive with objects such as bones, toys, etc.?
We completely can sympathize with you, and we understand how stressful this can be. You are not alone, and we are here to help you have peace of mind with your dog.
Recently, we began working with Drew with dog training. Ravenna is where Drew, an American Eskimo, and his family live. Drew bit his owner while he was being possessive over a toy.
Unfortunately, the owner was in pain. Fortunately she was able to remain calm and called Four Legged Scholars LLC Dog Training (Ravenna and surrounding areas).
We immediately began teaching Drew a crucial command, “leave it.” This is a command that can take quite a bit of time for owners and dogs to learn.
The case was no different here. “Leave it” instructs the dog to back away from the object. For a dog that guards or is possessive with objects, we want the dog to move four feet or more from the object and sit stay.
This allows room for the owner to pick up the object and for the dog to not be possessive. This process takes consistent dog training. Ravenna is an area that we serve so we can help you with this process.
We started with a treat in the owner’s closed hand. We rewarded, Drew for backing away from the treat in the owner’s hand.
He has to move at least four feet from the treat to get rewarded. Then we began to reward Drew for backing up and sitting. Now we are working on teaching him to sit stay.
Drew has gotten confused at times and so have the owners. However, the owners have been committed with their dog training. Ravenna now has a much calmer dog home because Drew is following directions much better now.
Your dog can learn this too. We are happy to help with dog training. Ravenna does not have many dog trainers that are reward-based so be conscious when hiring someone. Punishment can definitely make the problem worse.
