Four Legged Scholars LLC – Dog Obedience – Ravenna and Surrounding Areas
Are you feeling stressed because your dog jumps around and will not stay? Do you think: “Wouldn’t it be nice to have a dog that would “stay” up on my request?
You are definitely not alone with these thoughts. Let’s help you create more peace with your dog by training “stay.”
Currently, we are working with Shelby and her Yorkshire Terrier, Duckie. Duckie is cute and yet hyper at times. He jumps on people and has trouble holding still.
As a result, we are focusing on dog obedience. Ravenna is where they live. We took action in training Duckie “stay” last week.
There are a few rules to make sure you train “stay” successfully.
1.) Start with a very short length of time. Most dogs can begin with a 2-5 second stay.
2.) End on a positive note. This means that you release your dog with a command such as “all done,” “okay,” or “release.” The goal is to release your dog before he breaks the stay on his own.
3.) Use sit or down as a command rather than stay at first because your dog doesn’t know what “stay” means.
Dogs learn better if you train the behavior before adding the command when training dog obedience. Ravenna dog owners need to visualize learning a new language. You are speaking Italian to your dog right now.
4.) Do not use “come” to release your dog from staying unless you want them to learn to come running to you as you increase your distance away from your dog.
I have seen many owners do this when training dog obedience. Ravenna owners are usually disappointed because as they move farther away, their dog breaks the stay and runs to them.
5.) Only change one variable at a time. The 3 D’s are distance, distraction and duration. If the distractions are high have the distance and duration of the stay be short.
If you are working on distance have the distractions be easy and the duration of the stay be short. If you are working on duration then have the distance be short and the distractions be easy.
Here is the procedure that I like to use for training stay in dog obedience. Ravenna owners will begin by requesting, a sit or a down.
Then, take one small step away from you dog. If your dog holds the stay, click. Immediately return to your dog and give him at treat. Remind him to down or sit so that he doesn’t break the stay.
Repeat the same procedure again. Take only one small step and if your dog stays click and return to click. Repeat this for a few seconds.
Now, gradually increase the duration of the stay while you continue with the clicks and treats. Once your dog can stay well for about 30 sec add the “stay” command.
After that, start increasing the duration of the stay until your dog can stay for 1-5 min. Eventually, give your dog random treats during the stay so that you aren’t clicking and treating as often.
