Four Legged Scholars LLC – Bainbridge – Dog Training and Surround Areas
Do you feel fear when you have house guests? You know that your dog doesn’t enjoy it, so it is unpleasant for you too. We get it. We know how you feel, and you are not alone.
We have received many calls in regards to people living near Bainbridge. Dog training was their main interest. They wanted to train their dogs to “like” people coming into the house.
Today we had our first session with Bonnie who lives in Bainbridge. Dog training involving counter conditioning works best when we deal with dogs that have fear issues.
This means that the dog gets food from the visitor. This is common scenario that most people understand. However, most people progress too quickly.
It is important that you follow a few rules to get success in helping your dog to become more confident and calm.
1.) First it is best to have your dog in a closed room as the visitor enters into the house. Your dog will be more calm if he meets the visitor after the visitor has entered through the door.
2.) Bring your dog out on leash and keep your far away from the visitor. Make sure that your dog can remain somewhat calm when he sees the visitor.
If he cannot, then you are too close. You will find this to be difficult because many of your guests want to be close to your dog. Do not allow this.
3.) As soon as your dog enters the room with you and sees the guest, give your dog treats. Your dog will get treats the whole time the visitor is in his sight.
4.) Have the visitor do calming signals. This means that the visitor is sitting, not moving, not giving eye contact to your dog, not touching your dog, sitting sideways toward your dog, and not talking to your dog.
Basically, he is ignoring your dog. This will make everything more successful in Bainbridge. Dog training works best when the dog is not pressured to make contact with the visitor.
5.) Once your dog is close enough, the visitor can throw treats toward your dog. Make sure he throws them underhand and not overhand to be less threatening.
Do not make a trail of treats to get your dog to move closer to the visitor. Your dog will approach the visitor when he is ready.
6.) Do not have the visitor pet your dog. This is stressful and will break trust. Your dog is just getting “use” to this new person.
We hope this helps. This is called systematic desensitization and works well. We want you to have more peace in your home in Bainbridge. Dog training is only a call away if you need help from us.
