Four Legged Scholars LLC – Puppy Training – Garrettsville, Ohio and Surrounding Areas
Are you struggling with a new puppy that jumps, bites and chews? I am imagining that you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed or frustrated. You are not alone and we can help.
Currently, we are training a cute Labradoodle puppy named Frankie. Frankie lives in Garrettsville, Ohio. Puppy training is our main focus. His mom decided to work with us for multiple sessions.
When I arrived, the cute puppy wanted to chew on shoe laces, his cloth crate, clothes, and the carpet. He also wanted to jump on me every time I arrived. Even still he would play bite at times and with his sharp teeth it hurt. The owners were stressed by all of the above issues.
The biggest shift happened on our third session together when Frankie learned to “sit” on command. His owner, Megan and her children were so excited when they could say “sit” and Frankie would listen.
As your puppy learns to “sit” you can use this command to get your puppy to settle. While we were talking on Tuesday, Frankie just sat there. He didn’t jump, chew or bite. Why? Megan and I both focused on puppy training. Garrettsville puppy owners would be excited to know the secret.
We both c/t (clicked and treated) when Frankie was sitting and doing nothing. We rewarded him for good behavior. Because he was being rewarded for sitting, and he enjoyed the treats he was getting, he chose to stop doing “bad” behavior.
For successful puppy training, Garrettsville puppy owners need to shift their focus from giving their puppy attention when he is performing “bad” behavior to focusing their attention on him when he is being “good”.
We worked on stopping jumping on Tuesday too. We began to turn our backs on Frankie when he jumped. With consistent puppy training, Garrettsville guests will see Frankie’s jumping lessening over time.
Of course we gave him a c/t when he had four on floor as well. We repeated this process with him numerous times as I entered into their home from the main door. Frankie began to predict that he would get rewarded for “not” jumping.
“Leave it” can take time train but can help with both chewing and play biting. We started with a treat in a closed hand and rewarded Frankie when he looked away from the closed treated hand.
He is learning to look away from something that he wanted in the owner’s hand. Megan’s children took awhile to get the training process down because there is much to juggle.
However, over time they began getting success with “leave it.” By week three, Megan was able to say “leave it” and Frankie would turn his head away from her hand. Because they were consistent and persistent they are getting success with puppy training. Garrettsville relatives will be excited to see this new family member behave.
This past Tuesday we progressed to having Frankie “leave” food in an open hand. This was much harder for him but he caught onto this much faster than when we originally trained “leave it.”
Megan will be focusing on “leave it,” “jumping” and “sit” for homework this week. I requested her to command “sit” numerous times throughout the day to get Frankie to learn to listen to “sit” reliably throughout the day. I am excited to see how next week goes with puppy training. Garrettsville and surrounding areas is where we serve.
